NUS dance ensemble 2008

there were a total of seven items on that night
1. physical space by marcus foo
the process of creating a dance - where the choreographer has a certain level of connection tot he piece he creates. the concept or idea that he builds is surronded by elements that he has an understanding of or relates to him.
marcus's approach is similar as he looks at it from his view as a dancer where he is constantly pushing his physucal limits to achieve movement that is aesthetically pleasing. having wanted a dance that inspires both his dancers and the audience, the direction he took was to drive the idea of this kinesthetic perception of movement that he has, into something that reflects him artistically on where he stands as a young choreographer
one of the motivating factors for this peice is simple based on the concept of pure movement, the inspiration for this choreography comes from the dancers and is set specifically to each dancer's ability. the piece aims to achieve an athletic mood that displays dynamism, strength and speed.
my personal opinion: they used the better dancers in this item. before i read the programme booklet on how they translate this item, i told yang that i felt this item was very technical. as in dancers showing us all the techniques they have. i do agree technically, this bunch of dancers who did this item are pretty strong! n something not so nice we realised, isit thru that dancer dont have skinny legs?
cause the costume was pretty short, of course, wearing a short tights inside. but all we see when they were doing the walking around, was the very toned legs.
but anyway, a good way to start the concert, cause it leaves us expecting more

2. Hrafnaguldar by shahbirul zaki ahmad
...can'st thou the hour declare,
when they leave the vital air...
what accidents their life attend...
and what their mortal course shall end?
as for people who are in the dance industry, we all know zaki is a well-known choreographer in the singapore dan ce scene, and he was responsible for many large-scale singapore performances and concerts. i would say this dance is pretty much an abstract, where the dancers were wearing white loose fitting long sleeve tops, and white bottoms. which the dressing style reminds me of how the people at bintan hotel looks like. very relaxed and casual. this dance is pretty much like the translation said. a feeling of holyness. but wasnt one of my favourite. felt it was too draggy.
3. Next Day, Same Time, Same Place by Zhou Suli
"all i know is that the hours are long, under these conditions, and constrain us to beguile them with proceedings which - how shall i say - which may at first sight seem reasonable, until they become a habit. you may say it is to prevent our reason from foundering. No doubt. but has it not long been straying in the night without end of abyssal depths? That's what i sometimes wonder. You follow my reasoning?"
Vladimar, Waiting for Godot
sorry to say, but it didnt leave an impression on me on this item

4. The Love Cycle by Koustav Basu Mallick
Heartbreak marks the beginning
Over the years and the pain dissipates, longing ensues.
Regret is the end but sadly it brings you back to the beginning
this item was choreograph by the current president of the Ensemble whose pursuing a Bachelors degree in Communications and New Media under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, NUS. I felt this item was a little too draggy also. It compromises of a number of sogns inside this item. the only male dancer who dance in the first part of the item was good, but he didnt dance for the whole item. perhaps i'm a dancer, so when looking at the standards of the item, we tend to get a lil fussy n picky. but what was true and agreeded by the rest was almost all the dancers in this item are not able to do proper chaines (turns). it's either they do not know that they are suppose to "flick" their heads when they are doing numerous turns, or they were not taught on how to hold their body when they are turning. N what was not so good about the choreography was there was alot of such turns! Good attempt for the first time choreograhying, i would say.
5. At the Break of Dawn by Dan Kwoh
welcome earth's embrace as you lay
with angel siren voices floating at bay
cache of light fids a glorious awakening
commanding the rite of new day dawning
one of my favourite item of the night. very smart for the dancers to wear a reversible long heavy skirt that was brown on one side n gold on the other side. where they changes it to gold towards the second part of the dance. very strong choreography with quite a number of liftings in this dance. the dancers were very on timing as a whole, showing their techniques here and there. i love the feel of this item =)
fyi. dan kwoh also teaches comtemporary dance at various secondary schools and junior colleges. he is currently the artistic deirector/resident choreographer of singapore management university "InDanCity" which is the dance company that was awarded first rize in modern group at the 10th Asia Pacific Dance Competition.
6.Come rest in me by Shaun Lee
Come steal the night from these shades of gray
Come and embrace me with your touch
and tell me how it will never end.
Look beyong my mortality and let me live again.
Let me drown forever in your rivers of misplaced love.
Let me give your beauty for ashes and let me live through you.
-A vega
another one of the arty farty dance which i cannot interprete much of it. it started out with one guy speaking in french, n it seems like he's in pain. the whole dance feels like portraying a before and afterlife scene.

7. Four Short Stories about Boys and Girls by Zaini Mohd Tahir
Play rewind fast forward with these young accidental lovers as they tumble through the pages and stages of their love stories. Encounter Dysfunction in their ideal world. Erupt in Violence as they tumble forward, claiming ownership over the other. Then, like headless bodies governed by whim, be tugged their physical beings: they make up for lost time and lost love. Finally, rewind to the days of Senseless Happiness wheren othing else mattered.
a very fun item. where the choreographer himself stars in the item in his geeky glasses and comical acts that sets the whole concerts to the highest peak. this is an item that i bet anyone who went to the concert will not forget. especially the last scene of 1 set of couple which consisted of two guys! hahaha!
i was so attracted by this cover page of the programme booklet
